Wearing Skirts in Winter

Cooler weather is approaching, and for some, it's already arrived. The leaves have turned and we are gearing up for the holiday season.
(Okay, maybe you aren't yet, but I am :)

Some women struggle with wearing skirts in the winter because they fear drafts will chill their legs. This is a reasonable concern! But easily remedied :)

Try layering heavier tights or leggings (whichever you prefer) under your winter skirts. (One thing to note: Some fabrics tend to cling to each other, particularly in the dry, brisk winter air. Before going out, check to see if your's is. It will save you a lot of hassle. To remedy this, simply wear a silky slip of some kind!)

Next, wear boots, especially if you are wearing leggings. There are all kinds out there to cater to every woman's style.

Tall boots, short boots, flat boots and heeled boots! Find one you like.

My favorite is to pair a nice, warm, wool skirt, like the one below, (those are usually lined, so you don't have to worry about clinging) with leggings and boots.

Now some inspiration :)

Have fun and be warm!

Oh! And before I leave you alone. Let me just share with you this recipe from Pinterest for Pumpkin Spice Latte. Won't THAT warm you up?!
(Just click on the picture and it will take you to the recipe. Please note, I have yet to try this myself, but it looks so amazing I just had to share it with y'all :)

Maternity Clothes on Zulily

Hey everyone! (Or should I say expectant women and their friends :)
I recently found Zulily. I love it! Its basically different companies that promote big sales that they have, on Zulily-daily deals for moms, babies and kids. (Each company only has a few days, so its constantly new stuff.) It's like discount shopping tons of different brands all on one site.
Now, you're probably wondering if I got a job advertising for them. Nope! Just really, really like what I see on there.

This morning I found these really cute maternity tops and wanted to share! This company's sale ends early, early Sunday morning. So you have the rest of the day and tomorrow (Sat.) to get them.

So if you know of anyone that is expecting, feel free to pass it along. (It would also be a great gift.)

One of the things I really like about it, is you can use pay-pal. There are days when there isn't any really good deals, and then days that there are.

So... here goes...

easily layered with a tank...

both- $19.99

not everyone's style, but sweet and modest...

Just a few I saw and really liked. There are tons more!

Kylie Bisutti- "I want to honor God and my husband"

"Victoria's Secret was my absolutely biggest goal in life, and it was all I ever wanted career-wise. I actually loved it while I was there, it was so much fun and I had a blast. But the more I was modeling lingerie, and lingerie isn't clothing, I just started becoming more uncomfortable with it because of my faith...
I'm Christian, and reading the Bible more, I was becoming more convicted about it."
'It was pretty crazy because I finally achieved my biggest dream, the dream that I always wanted, but when I finally got it, it wasn't all that I thought it would be,' she said.

'Especially being married I just wanted to keep my marriage sacred because divorce rates now in America are pretty high, and I just want to do everything I can to keep my marriage special.'

Bisutti had decided to leave the lingerie company awhile ago. On Dec. 1, the day after the nationally televised Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in which Bisutti didn’t appear, the model posted to her Twitter page, “For all of you that were looking for me in the Victoria's Secret runway show this year, I wasn’t in it. I have decided not to model lingerie because I personally feel that I am not honoring God or my husband by doing it. My marriage is very important & with divorce rates rising I want to do everything I can to protect my marriage and be respectful to my husband. God graciously gave me this marriage and this life and my desire is to live a Godly faithful life, I don’t however judge others for what they do. Everyone is convicted on different levels.”

“He was so, so supportive of me and I’m so thankful that he let me grow and let me come to this decision on my own,” she said of her husband.
Bisutti’s decision to leave the lingerie company was also spurred on by an encounter with her 8-year-old cousin.
“I was doing my makeup in the mirror one day and she was watching me,” Bisutti said. “She looked at me and was like, ‘You know, I think I want to stop eating so I can look like you.’”
“It just broke my heart because she looks up to me and I didn’t want to be that type of person that she thought she had to do that to be beautiful,” she said. “Thousands of girls that think that being beautiful is an outer issue and really it’s a heart issue.”

Bisutti hasn’t completely given up on modeling just yet. She also posted to her Twitter page, “I am still modeling but only with brands that respect my decision not to wear lingerie. I am also doing TV work now :).”

She appears with Jennifer Lopez in a new Kohl’s commercial, and she’s working on a new television show to hit the CW in September. “My goal is just to be a better role model for the youth. I just want them to see me as somebody that they can look up to and somebody that’s going to be dressing appropriately and I’m not going to get into things that I wouldn’t want them to be getting into,” Bisutti told FOX411.

“I want to go over the top because I don’t think enough people go over the top about how serious all this is. I just want people to see something different about me because I have that faith and I think it’s so important for everyone to have.”

I applaud her for taking a stand. People change.
"I'm Christian, and reading the Bible more, I was becoming more convicted about it." She admits she was wrong. It's sick! Christians accuse her of false motives and insincerity and others of being prudish. If you don't want people to harass you for your beliefs, don't harass others for theirs! And, give her time to prove herself before you jump to comculsions. That's my opinion :)

(Btw, I saw this morning that at least one of my fellow bloggers had already posted about this, so I apologize. I actually did the draft for this post last night and then when I saw that this morning, I didn't click on it, because I didn't want it to influence my post. Lol! There was a really good interview she did with abc news, but the played pix of her modeling for VS, so I just quoted what she said.)

None of this belongs to me, I compiled them from other sources :)

Belated thoughts on the English royal wedding.

I have a great appreciation for the Duchess of Cambridge. You see, I worked in the bridal industry and got married myself, shortly before the royal wedding in England. I can attest to the fact that dresses covering even as much as her's did were very hard to find. And you can forget bridesmaids' dresses with sleeves, too.
I know that to most of you this is old news, but I was on a cruise ship in the middle of the atlantic, watching the whole thing live, on my honeymoon. So I'm just now getting around to this :)
While personally I would prefer more coverage, I have to hand it to her, it was very tasteful in this day and age. She also made it possible for other brides, wishing for a little more than the status quo, to get it!

Since I worked at David's Bridal and know the types of gowns brides had to work with before, I am posting pix of the dresses they released after the wedding.

Yes, thank you!

I love the flowergirls' dresses!

Anyhow, that's all for now. I was keeping a journal during our honeymoon and recorded my thoughts on their wedding, but will spare y'all the long and drawn-out details :)
And remember, feedback is always appreciated! I've tried to make it easier to do so because I realize not everyone has loads of time.

I know I'm a terribly sporatic blogger. *sigh*
What to do about it? I've thought about having a blogging marathon where I post something on each of my blogs at least twice a week. But I worry that I will run out of interesting things and bore you. Which in my opinion is worse than not doing anything.
Same thing goes for my facebook page. You know when you "like" a page and then all the sudden your homepage is full of their posts? That to me is annoying, but so is total silence. Ugh! A balance please?!
Another problem I have is posting a blog but then not sharing it on my page.

Omw ladies! I just found this awesome website, and they have some really beautiful dresses.
Check it out for yourself! Dress and Tux.com

Really like some of the details on this one!

And this one, I really like the sleeve length!

Not much into the princess look? Now this is elegant! Now just imagine the neckline modified to a sweetheart neckline. Beauty defined...

I love being able to look online for ideas. Someday when I open my own shop... Lol!

The Art of Layering

While striving to dress modestly, most of us, sooner or later, come across the cutest shirt that is perfect. However, the neckline maybe lower than we are comfortable with or the sleeves-too short. And that, dear friends, is when the art of layering comes in handy.
I say "art" because it is. Layering is one of those things that can make or break a wardrobe. Done poorly, it can become the ultimate example of frumpy. Done tastefully, it can broaden the horizons of our wardrobe considerably.

Christopher & Banks is one of my favorite suppliers for layering. They have tons of different colors. I started with some neutrals-white, off-white, tan, brown and black-and am slowly collecting pretty colors like: aqua, turquoise, ect. They are a little pricey, but they have lots of sales. Right now, they are having a sale where if you buy one clearance item, you can get the second free. (I don't know if this is only online though.) They also have skirts and dresses, but their outlet selection is a lot better than the online store.

My basic all around base layer: it solves low necklines and thin fabric.

If that is a little high-necked for you, how 'bout this one?

Have an adorable sleeveless shirt? I love the sleeve length coverage on this T!
CLASSIC Fit Satin Trim Tee - Christopher & Banks
Want something a little less? This is a great layer as well.
EVERYDAY Fit Square Neck Tee - Christopher & Banks
This is one of my favs. I just layer a contrasting shell under it, and its a little dressier due to the sleeve length.

Here's a few other ones that I thought were cute.

Anyway, until next time ladies. And in the meantime, check your local mall for C&B's!

Beautiful formal wear...

Its the Audree from Totally Modest, one of their new wedding gowns!
I am sooo in love with this dress. I think it is beautiful!
Normally I'm not a real lacy girl, but this is perfect.
Personally, I might prefer a slightly higher neck-line,
but that is very easy to fix (especially on square necks).

And how's this for an adorable flower girl's dress?!
(Y'all know I'm partial to turquoise and aqua :)

The Latest...

"Your dresses should be tight enough to show that you're a woman and loose enough to show that you're a lady." -Edith Head

Found this quote today and love it. I figure God made us the way He did for a reason, we shouldn't be ashamed of it, although we should be respectful of it.
In reading other blogs, and researching modesty online, I can totally understand why the average person automatically thinks "frumpy" when they hear "modest". Ugh! It sooo doesn't have to be that way.

I just found this web site: The Modest Mom. It is sooo cool. Being a mom, she does focus on maternity clothing, but I love this skirt.
Rainbow Striped Denim Skirt
She is pricey, but a birthday present? Lol! I love it. *sigh*

Those of you who follow my other blog probaby already know this, but this last weekend I made a set of 6 little girls jumpers to put in the Palisade Peach Festival.
Here it is!
I thought they turned out pretty cute. I guess I wasn't the only one because I sold 5 out of 6 :)

Ummm... ***blushes***

Ok. So I've sorely neglected my blogs, I know.

I've been thinking that all of my friends, particularly guy friends, may not care to have their homepage on facebook hijacked with Modest Clothing posts. So I have set up a facebook page for my blog, Modest Clothing. Those of you who would like to follow my blog on facebook may do so, by liking my page. However, that does not guarantee the rest of you won't still get updates until my page is established. Sorry!

So. I've been in Colorado with my husband. Right now we are renting the place next-door to his folks. We are still planning, eventually, to go to Minnesota to finish the house up there.
You're probably wondering how this ties in with clothing. Just give me a minute, because I'm getting around to that :)

Lately, I've been spending some time with his sisters sewing. Towards the end of August, there is a peach harvest fiber festival here in the valley, and his family has been invited as guests of honor. You may be thinking, "What is a fiber festival?" It is a festival showcasing fiber crafts. Now you're probably thinking, "What's a fiber craft?" Anything that has to do with cotton, wool, etc. Spinning, weaving, sewing, knitting, crocheting, whatever. They are setting up a booth with spinning and weaving displays. They totally take it a step further than I do. Yes, I have spun, and I have woven, and may again, but WOW! They can do some pretty awesome things, although quite time consuming :) They also are setting up handmade products from their country store, and us girls are making some clothes to sell. Super excited! Found some cute jumper patterns for little girls and nice patterns for ladies' skirts.

Just curious...how much would you women be willing to pay for a fairly custom, hand-made skirt? What is your normal outfit budget? Mine is usually $10-$30, depending on how cute it is and how much I need it. Oh! And how much money I have at the time :)

Speaking of money...
I love bargains, my mom taught me well :) What are your favorite, maybe secret, bargain haunts? Mine would be Kohl's (they get really cute skirts from time to time :), and local consignment shops. I know that it is second hand clothing, but if you are willing to be patient and dig, you can find some pretty awesome deals, like practically brand-new, name-brand clothing. Love that! (Make sure you check it out good for stains and wear though, because lots of consignment shops don't except returns.) Besides, its fun when someone comes up to you and is like, "Where did you get that?" Because its so cute and they want one like it! You can be like, "Sorry, got the last one!" :) Be original!

What about this cute, comfy, tiered skirt from Kohl's for $24.99?
SONOMA life + style Tiered Maxi Skirt

Maybe you're like, "That's still a little much for me."

How 'bout this fun, yet formal a-line skirt for $19.99?
Croft and Barrow Floral A-Line Skirt

And...for my friends that prefer shorter skirts, around their knees...
How's this vintage, cute little skirt for $48.30?
Chaps Park Avenue Floral Tiered Skirt

Or...this cleaner, and still cute, yet could pull off a professional look skirt for $36.00?

Anyway, hope y'all have a really good week...
Peace!

An Interesting and Fresh Perspective

This is from Abbey – she’s a big fan of Project Inspired and asked if she could share these word about dressing modestly with us. Enjoy! – Nicole
“Mom, does this outfit look modest enough on me?”
This is a question that I often find myself asking my mother. This is also a question that you should learn how to ask your mother (or aunt, uncle, sister, brother, dad or a trusted friend) without feeling awkward. How can we be modest in a world filled with mostly immodest celebrities, singers, dancers, TV shows, models and everyday teenagers? What IS modesty? Well, you will soon find out!
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t always hooked onto modesty, thinking, ‘Why can’t I dress like everyone else does?’ When my mom first told me about modesty and how there were certain standards that I needed to have when it came to what I wore, I thought, “Is there something wrong with what I’m wearing now?”  What I didn’t realize was how a guy’s mind works, no matter what the age of the guy. So mom sat me down and gently started telling me how the male mind was wired.
I remember her saying something like this:
“Honey, when a guy looks at a pie plate, he starts to envision a hot, juicy apple pie in the plate. And then he can smell the aroma of apples, and his taste buds start to tingle with the anticipation of biting into the pie. And then his mouth starts to water as he can almost taste the pie in his mouth. It’s the same idea when a guy looks at a young girl who is showing off a little skin. He starts to see things that aren’t there, things that he shouldn’t be envisioning.  That’s why it’s so important to remain covered with clothing and not show off our bodies.  There are too many guys out there searching for that ‘hot, juicy apple pie’ in a young girl.”
I was still a little upset that I had to give up some of my clothes, especially some of the ones that I really liked to wear. But once my mom said she would help me clean out my closet, and then we could go to the store on a shopping spree, I got pretty excited. While we cleaned out my closet, my mom and I made three piles: Keep, Give, and Dump.
Into the ‘Keep’ pile went all modest clothes that fit me (obviously I was keeping these clothes!). All clothes that I tried on that were modest, but that didn’t fit me well went in the Give pile (mom and I took these to the city mission on our way to the mall). When we found clothes in my closet that drew attention to certain parts of my body that were showing off my body in some way, they went into the ‘Dump’ pile — which in reality, turned out to be the garbage can!
So you may be thinking, how do you define modest or modesty?
The dictionary definition for modest is ‘moderate; decent’. Moderate means to ‘keep within reasonable limits’, or ‘one who avoids extreme actions’. A definition of decent is ‘respectable, moral, in good tastes; becoming proper; suitable, virtuous’. If we want to be respected as woman, and not be pushed around because of what we wear, we must wear respectable clothes that are kept within reasonable boundaries!
As God’s precious children, we need to be known as virtuous women who obey our Heavenly Father’s laws for how we dress and how we act towards others. Modesty is the first place to start when you want to be a virtuous woman.
Virtuous can mean ‘completely pure’, which goes right along with being modest. When you are dressing modestly, you are not bringing attention to your body’s figure. When you dress to bring attention to your body, you may not realize this, but you are actually increasing the chance that guys are thinking lustful thoughts when they look at you. If you don’t want to be thought of as a piece of pie that a guy really wants, eats, and the next day forgets all about, then dress modestly. If you want to be known as a piece of God’s own handiwork, important, amazing, beautiful and completely unpredictable, then you need to dress modestly.  Get the picture?
When you think of modesty, what do you picture in your mind? This can be a hard question. There is no right or wrong answer for it. When some girls think of modesty, they think of a woman that always wears skirts, pants or capris and a loose fitting t-shirt. Some girls think modesty means never wearing makeup. Still, others think it means wearing dresses that look like they’re from the 1800s!
This is what modesty means to me:
Staying within the boundaries that you have set for yourself, never crossing the red line and always living the way that God would want you to!
Now, this does NOT mean that you can make boundaries for yourself that have immodest ways in them. This is what living as a Christian girl really means. Another thing about making boundaries for yourself is that others such as a friend, parent or an older sibling also needs to agree that what you’re wearing is modest.
Here are a few tips to help you get started on your modest wardrobe:
  1. Find some ‘A’ tanks or ‘boyfriend’ tanks, the long ribbed tank tops that guys wear, and layer with them. They are great to tuck into low-rising pants and for layering under low shirts — and they come in just about every color!
  2. Always go clothes shopping with your mother or with a friend of yours that has the same mindset on modesty as you do. When you find something that you would like to buy, you can check with that person to see if it passes her modesty guidelines.
  3. Steer away from name brands when possible and shop at more conveniently-priced locations.  Many brand name clothing companies actually have items of lesser quality than off-brand names!
  4. You can also wear pretty dresses and skirts but just make sure they hit the knees- or just at little above. But no shorter!
Remember that the purpose of modesty is not to suck all the joy out of life but to help you remain pure for your King and for your future spouse! And it can be a lot more fun than you might think. Give it a try!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Peace :)

You're wondering about my personal fashion tastes...

So now you're probably wondering what my style and comfort levels are. I would say that my style is classic with a modern twist, more than anything else. But that does not mean that I don't venture out when then mood suits me. Just nothing frumpy or Little House on the Prairie for me, thank you. (And of course, everyone has a different idea of what falls into those categories :)

If you look at my wedding pictures, you can get a pretty good sense of my personality and tastes (at least my formal-wear tastes).

My wedding dress was a classic princess-seam and A-line dress with a sweetheart neck-line. The modern touches where the bell cuffs on the sleeves, the ruched sash with beading and we squared the sweetheart neck-line.

Here is my dress, waiting for me to put it on. (This picture is good for showing off the beading.)

Here is one that shows the top details. (A friend made my dress and did a wonderful job interpreting my comfort level, even though she did not understand it.)

Wow! I put this one in so you could get a over-all effect, and yikes! All the emotions, feelings and thoughts that were going through my head, when this picture was taken, came rushing back.

Very intense moment.

Another one for details and over-all effect.

Then, after all the formalities, it's time to party! Here I am in the party dress that I made for the dancing. It was even more modern than the wedding gown.

I took a classic business dress pattern, narrowed the sides of the neck-line, shortened it to where I wanted the flare to start, then added a full-circle flare to the bottom. I must admit that I'm pretty proud of that dress. The supplies-including fabric, pattern and notions-cost under $35.

The main thing about me that's not classic, would be my taste in colors :)

Day on the Town

Today, my sister and I went to Waco with three awesome girlfriends. We shopped, ate and shopped some more.

Being that we are all girls, what do you think we shopped for? That's right, shoes and clothes!

All of us are on some sort of budget or another. (Two of us are newlyweds, one of us just completed a year-long term of mission work and the other two still live at home.) So, most of the time, we just looked.

But what I loved about it, was just having some girl time to hang out and have fun. It was very entertaining to listen to each of their opinions on different articles of clothing. I think it's totally awesome that each of them has slightly different tastes.

While we were shopping, none of them except for my sister, knew about this blog. So it was pretty cool to listen to them discussing their various levels of comfort, as far as modesty goes. Their styles are different and their comfort levels are different, and you know what the most awesome thing about that is? The fact that all of us are totally cool with the fact that we are different! I love it when someone is okay with being at a different comfort level-fashion wise, and okay with other people having different standards than their's.

Its amazing all the different comfort levels! Some make sure their shirts have sleeves and show no cleavage, while others must have their sleeves covering their elbows and their neck-lines right at the base of their neck. Now obviously those examples I gave are from opposite sides of the spectrum. Regardless of where you are, you probably have experienced limitations on availability. However, the more conservative, the harder it is and the more diligently you have to look. But don't worry. Somewhere out there, there is something for everybody and we are gonna find it  :)

Why...?

After working in a main-stream store for women's formal wear for almost a year, I realized that lots of us are unsatisfied with the modesty standards of main-stream formal wear.

This last year it hit me particularly hard as I prepared for my own wedding. Come to think of it, the only female member of the wedding party who managed to find an outfit, was my mom. I found that at Dillard's (and paid an arm and a leg for it). And she had a friend rework the collar to make it more comfortable for her.

Didn't she look beatiful? (Hopefully soon, after we get all our pictures from our photograghers I will have a better full-length picture.)

Everyone else either made their own, or had a friend make it for them.
Don't they turn out awesome? I love that color!
And if you go here...you can see the adorable flowergirls :)

However, I realize that not everyone can sew formal-wear, or has friends that can sew it. So that is the reason for this blog.
So, if you're interested at all, please follow. Just try it, it's easy, I promise :)
